This chapter discusses anti-racism education by focusing on how culture is used in educational discourses in Finland. More and more studies highlight the pervasive use of culture as a substitute for race, urging scholars to explore how and why cultural claims are made relevant (Breidenbach and Nyiri 2009; Piller 2011). Culture is present in numerous subjects (e.g. religion, literature, history, languages) and anti-racism education should therefore be understood from a holistic perspective. Exploring Finnish Guidance Counselors’ Conceptions of Career Management Skills

This article reports the findings from a phenomenographic investigation into guidance counselors’ conceptions of career management skills (CMS). The results show that CMS was conceived as (a) information-based knowledge, (b) personal skills development, (c) interpersonal skills development, and (d) autonomous application of skills. The differences appeared along six dimensions of variation that included awareness of CMS, emphasis, promotion of CMS, teaching practice, assessment, and attitude. The findings give us a more profound understanding of critical aspects that may have an important role in the development of individual’s CMS.
Children's rights and teachers' responsibilities : Reproducing or transforming the cultural taboo on child sexual abuse?

Enhancing young learners’ knowledge about appropriate and inappropriate sexual behaviour is crucial for the protection of children’s rights. This article discusses teachers’ understandings of their practices and approaches to the topic of child sexual abuse in Norwegian upper secondary schools, based on phone interviews with 64 social science teachers. Countering child sexual abuse is a political priority for the Norwegian government, and the Committee on the Rights of the Child acknowledges several state initiatives to counter child sexual abuse through education. El trabajo presenta un breve repaso del nacimiento del concepto de homeostasis en la historia de la fisiología. Se ha realizado un estudio de aula con estudiantes de tercer curso de secundaria apreciando las dificultades que estos presentan para construir una visión holista del concepto de homeostasis. La ciencia escolar porta una iconicidad múltiple, derivada del lenguaje experto, que en muchos casos se revela como un obstáculo para el aprendizaje de los estudiantes novatos. Siendo la homeostasis un concepto básico en la estructura del curriculum nacional se hace una llamada para ahondar en su investigación didáctica.
Younger children in ECEC: focus on the national steering documents in the Nordic countries

The aim of this study was to review the national steering documents on early childhood education and care (ECEC) in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden, with the focus on children up to the age of three, posing the question: What do these documents tell us about ECEC for younger children in the Nordic early childhood settings? Methodologically, a qualitative document analysis was applied. A Theoretical Framework to Foster Digital Literacy: The Case of Digital Learning Resources

The New National Curriculum in Norway from 2006 recommends that teachers and students acquire a high degree of digital literacy in school education. One way to foster digital literacy is to train teachers to design and critically evaluate digital learning resources (DLRs). However, little research has been done as to which design principles and evaluation criteria are suitable for DLRs. This work proposes a theoretical framework, along with a case study, for designing and evaluating DLRs. The article draws on research in learning theory, pedagogical usability criteria, and context of use. The paper reports on the implications of the framework for the design and evaluation of DLRs.
Assessing learners’ writing skills in a SLA study: Validating the rating process across tasks, scales and languages

There is still relatively little research on how well the CEFR and similar holistic scales work when they are used to rate L2 texts. Using both multifaceted Rasch analyses and qualitative data from rater comments and interviews, the ratings obtained by using a CEFR-based writing scale and the Finnish National Core Curriculum scale for L2 writing were examined to validate the rating process used in the study of the linguistic basis of the CEFR in L2 Finnish and English. Scholars have argued that there is no simple definition for research due to a wide variety of disciplines and educational contexts; how students are involved in research may vary a lot with a discipline, and with national and regional curricula within a particular discipline. The present study advances autoethnographic accounts of two Bhutanese students' participation in research.
